I'm listening, particularly agree with your last sentence. Just a word of warning should you venture to the Emirates / Olympic Park etc etc. You insist on standing up and swearing (naughty naughty boy) - you will get ejected. Reminds me of a trip to Arsenal / Sunderland (first game of the season about 5 years ago). Kieran Richardson went in studs up early on. I involuntarily jump up out my seat with a "f*ck off Richardson" - at which point I'm glared at by about 20 people and a steward reminds me if I do it again I'll be out. Welcome to the sterile, sanitised and thoroughly tedious world of corporate football. You're welcome to it. Not been to the Vetch or Boothferry Park so can't comment. I bet you real Brighton fans prefer the Goldstone Ground. I'll do some digging and report back. UTG! This. You missed a treat not going to The Vetch. Gone now, some kind of landscaped 'open space' has replaced it. Getting in and out was terrifying, once in, it was a fantastic old stadium, huge away terrace with a bizarre food outlet where you couldn't see directly into the booth, the counter had a grille so the food/drink was passed around a slalom, all you saw was the stuff appear and a hand grab the money, bit like one of those late night liquor outlets in USA. Far end of the ground developed with the money they made when they got into Div 1 many years back, then the money ran out, the rest of the ground similar to Eastville, great old ground, shame their fans still think it's 1974 and want to fight everybody. I can only speak from experience. Went to new ground on chuffer to see Swans v @rsenal a few years ago. Mate and I done pub crawl to ground including one particular hole that was obviously drugs and kids. Every one we were welcomed in! Honestly! I was amazed. Couldn't do that years ago. Even near ground, groups of lads of both teams singing and jovial atmosphere, not much police around. Ok, they weren't playing a Bristol team. And after a few beers, found myself reminiscing with locals about famous Duke of Glamorgan incident and other 'jack' outings. Ok, we weren't a threat. Honestly as I live and breathe, I never thought I would find myself in that situation and feeling relatively safe. I know what you mean, Bambi....just speaking as I find. I had no problem that day, and apparently (maybe luckily) they had no problem with me..

Odd isn't it, Cardiff, Swansea, inhabited mostly by perfectly normal people who you can have a civilised conversation with. But arrive on a match day with a Brizzle accent and you can be in serious bother. Ask the people on the SC coach a few years back that had a brick launched through the window. Or the people who had bottles (contents probable wouldn't get past forum filters) launched at them by Cardiff fans whilst the stewards stood and watched Maybe it's changed now, haven't been to either place for a game for a few years.

Bumped into three coach loads of Cardiff fans in Reading services on our way to Stevenage last season, had my gas shirt on and they were sound, had a good chat with a couple of them, they were on their way to Brentford.

Oh yeah, I'm not doubting. Like I said, DoG incident any encounter with Jacks. If you're in a certain persons' mini bus late 80s/early 90s (or coach) stopping at Port Talbot on the beach....hazardous days. Also a Cheltenham train station encounter with chance meeting of Soul crew that made headlines. Oh ah, none of these things am sure are confined to past. Maybe, if it was Bristol they were playing it would be different? Maybe if our attitude had been different? Maybe if didn't have home end tickets it would be different? All I can say is, I too was amazed. But let's be perfectly honest, if a couple of neutral fans came up Glos Rd, no threat, bit older, happy to chat about old days and content with the world paying respect, would we be any different?

The Gents urinal in the away end certainly wasn't sanitised, a room about 8 by 6 with just a channel in the concrete floor around the sides with no flushing water or sinks.

Totally agree about the new stadiums having no atmosphere,Scunthorpe,Oxford,Northampton really boring and dull days out. I enjoyed some of the non league away games,no 'facilities' but some decent atmosphere, like going back to the 70s (almost). Whats the obsession with toilets ? I know that most here are older blokes so posibly prostate problems, but unless your bladders the size of a pea how many times do you need to go in 90 minutes ?
I definitely prefered the old grounds, went to Highbury for the league cup game in the 80s,great night, the Vetch several times the best beating them 1-0 in a night time FA cup game great atmosphere, Hull that last away game when Paul Randalls goal kept Rovers up,another good away day. I know that it just isnt done on here to say that city/Lansdown got anything right, but I think that by rebuilding AG they are keeping their 'heritage' (for want of a better word) they can go in the same pubs they have always drunk in pre / post match...mind you even a lot of city fans say that the atmosphere there isnt the same since it went all seater.

They've been sold right down the river. Heritage?! Nah just the franchise bubble of Brizzle Sport.

How much heritage can you build up if you've only existed for 34 years and your starting point is shafting local businesses and suppliers?
As for all seater, hope we find a way to avoid it. It kills atmosphere and you're up and down like a flipping yoyo with late comers, early leavers, every attack, every foul, every decision that goes against you, then there's the weak bladder brigade who have to shuffle past you half a dozen times in 90 minutes.
Can't we just buy out Ikea and rebuild Eastville just how it was in 1974 please?

Now you're just being silly. Allegros were only introduced in 1973, so were brand new. But come to think of it, they came out of the Leyland factory, so fair point, they were probably all piles of rust by '74 and half of them wouldn't start if left standing for 90 minutes.

Charlie Colkett came on for the second half and was brilliant. This moves me onto my highlight of the evening. Did you see Charlies back heeled half volleyed killer pass for Mattys second? He's on the edge of their box.The ball is up in the air and due to land in Charlies range. 1.He takes a look behind at Matty. 2.He allows the ball to land behind him. 3.I'm not sure if he is even actually watching the ball, but he than delivers a killer back heeled half volly for Matty to score. It looked world class to me.Zindane eg,would of been happy with that one and i can't recall ever seeing the like at Rovers before or even on the box. Here's a quick replay of that little tickle, well worth another go: vine.co/v/5w79vZ9phQO

[br Actually, Allegros and Maxis were quite rust resistant, Avengers were pretty good too. Hunters not so good. Floors would rot out pretty quickly. Mk1 Escorts, Mk3 Cortinas and Capris were very rot prone. Front inner wing McPherson strut mountings. I rest my case.....

I think Lancia were part of Fiat, then state owned by the Italian government. Apparently the Italians struck a deal with USSR for cheap imported steel. Trouble was, it made it's journey via sea strapped to the decks of ships, sheets of unprotected steel stacked on pallets. By the time it got to the factory half of it was too far gone. The stuff what was left they built the cars out of, they were starting to rust even before they were painted! Stories of UK dealers having to have brand new Lancias welded, re painted etc! Oh dear. I digress....

Have to concur with the above. The Vetch was definitely one of the more 'charismatic' grounds if you can call it that! The giant iron-clad kenco jar with the phantom serving hands for the food outlet was a classic and that bog was absolute filth. Not a place for the faint hearted around there either. Ground was a total shambles with odd-shaped stands and different types of floodlights in each corner. I'm sure the Swansea lads loved it though. Hard to tell if the picture above was taken before or after demolition started to be honest. It really was a proper away day travelling to Swansea...

I think eppinggas makes a valid point about the absence of atmosphere in many new stadia. But, is it all down to the stadia and their architecture? Or is it anything to do with the gentrification of some clubs: was the "Highbury Library" just a convenient rhyme?. Is the loss of atmosphere and culture inevitable on moving to a new stadium? Or can supporters influence the organisation to help ensure the best of the old world can migrate into the new? From another thread, "Cast In Stone" wrote: "Their [guess who?] home receipts must dwarf ours and at £34 for a walk up to sit behind the goal I expect their receipts are treble ours. We desperately need that new ground if we are going to compete on the pitch with our old rivals". LinkThanks GasMacc1. I think what we need (and we have hope of this with Wael Al-Qadi) - is a serious discussion about how we can retain the atmosphere within the confines of a new stadium. I am praying that 'safe-standing' or some kind of compromise can be found whereby people are allowed to stand if they want. Terraces didn't kill people. Bad policing and non-existent health & safety killed people. The best atmosphere for 90 minutes at a game I've been to this season - without a shadow of a doubt - FC Union Berlin vs Karlsruhe. Capacity of 22,012. Seats 3,617 (a lot unused). The last major ground re-development was in 2009. 3 massive terraces and non-stop noise. You can have a beer on the terrace during the game! It was simply awesome. ("Highbury Library" is indeed just a funny couplet - the atmosphere on the North Bank / Clock End was as good as anywhere else. Just jealous fans using it when an admittedly boring boring Arsenal were winning everything. Ask any gooner - they would have Highbury back in a heartbeat). Here is the dichotomy - I agree totally that we need a new stadium to move the Club to the next level. However new grounds (specifically all-seater soul-less bowls) kill atmosphere.

'The Colkett' as it should correctly be known really has gone viral. It got spruiked by SBS (one of the terrestrial TV channels over here in oz) yesterday!
Excellent little trip by Matty at the start of that move as well. Freed him up nicely for the tap-in...

I've only watched it back about 50 times. MK Dons were going to ground at every opportunity. Pathetic diving cheats (and their idiot manager admitted as much). Matty never takes his eyes off of the ball and probably doesn't even know that that 'defender' had hit the deck. I see MK lost 0-3 at home to Sarfend in front of an alleged crowd of 11,039. LOL. Bye bye brainless Karl Robinson.

It's weird looking back at it now, but when I was a youngster my parents separated and very unusual at the time my father got custody. We moved from Bristol to Rhondda. I started supporting the Gas when I used to visit my mother on a Saturday. My fathers cousin was a league ref and a Swansea fan. So I went to both Eastville and the Vetch. Rovers where and still are my team but have a soft spot for them. Felt weird when I went to the Millennium to watch them versus the Tykes. Being Welsh and having liked them for so long suddenly wanting them to lose.
