'You have the best fans scrappy scrappy Chelsea.
My best memory of the game, the applause for John Hollins from the Rovers fans. Respect.'

Just arrived home.
Very proud tonight to be a Gashead.
Chelsea have some very classy players - Pedro and Moses are so skilful, and Fabregas ran the midfield. Even their substitutes were quite famous. While we never looked as if we would get a result, the lads put in a good shift and were far from disgraced. I was sitting with the Chelsea supporters, and they were distinctly unhappy with their team's performance.

Very proud after watching tonight. We fought back really well second half. Easter made a difference coming on and we looked a different team second half. Was fearing the worse after about 30 mins. Never seen us so outclassed. Sang our hearts out and that made for a great atmosphere. UTG

A real shame, but unfortunately I expect you'll get this behaviour in most clubs.

A real shame, but unfortunately I expect you'll get this behaviour in most clubs. I watch my local Rugby League team in Sydney. On entering the stadium every supporter is encouraged to text the ground management with their seat number/stadium location and reason for concern should they feel uncomfortable. The safety team will then move to the area and observe (not in fluorescent clothing) and act if there is clear unreasonable behavior. If they don't see anything immediately they will still stay at the location for a prolonged time. There's no 'thought police' mentality but any factors that make any person feel unwelcome are quickly nipped in the bud. Brilliantly, all supporters are encouraged to bring food into the stadium so long as it is purchased from a non-multi national (McDonalds etc) and ideally from the local independent stores. The behavior as HB mentions above seems so foreign to the behavior here. I would say the atmosphere at NRL games is very mute (almost silent) which may just be a correlation in stadium management or a result of lack of sporting identity at club level.

Sang loud and proud last night, absolutely brilliant we have our Rovers back.
I hope Wael could be proud of how our team performed in 2nd half, causing Chelsea to bring on three star subs as we threatened in spells.
Off the pitch we sang through Fulham Broadway to Earls Court (had to alight there) with no trouble and good natured songs.
In the ground, we made the atmosphere! Incredible, we can make more noise than the other 35,000 put together, even when losing.
Wael, club and fans can remember a fantastic away day and behaviour of our fans fitting of our club that has it's pride intact. Well done everyone. That's what it feels to be a GasHead, to compete with the best and outsing opponents.....UptheGas!

I was the only Gashead in my tube back towards Waterloo and the Chelsea fans were good natured and complimentary to the team and the support. They also asked why we sing Irene. 😊

Well done Gasheads, sat in with Chelsea so I could be with my son, although I'm a ST holder, and Rovers totally out sang Chelsea - making all the noise. The players and DC also did us proud and there was no shame in losing; I'm sure some were expecting going for a Burton, but the team played so well particularly in the second half.

Likewise I was in the Chelsea end to be with my son. I don't think I was alone either as quite a few joined in with the 'all hate the sh*t' clapping! The locals around us were getting very twitchy towards the end, and a lot of them clapped our team when they went over to the Shed to applaud the away end (I was in the shed end of the west stand). It was also really pleasing that the Chelsea version of Nick Day called us Rovers rather than Bristol, a nice touch from him.

There's a very well written report (albeit, naturally, focusing on their own team) on the Chelsea website. The juiciest bits about Rovers are: "...the Blues, who were playing our first game at this stage of the League Cup for 20 years, came up against a resilient Rovers side, and although our chances came at regular intervals during the first half on a hot and steamy night at Stamford Bridge, they proved harder to find in the second period.
We had gone into a 2-0 lead before the West Country team scored their first and although 3-1 was the half-time lead, a Rovers penalty early in the second half meant this game was never comfortable. It appeared to be all plain sailing...but then Peter Hartley, who scored a comparable goal at the weekend, met a Rovers free-kick into our penalty area with the perfect header to beat Begovic and it was suddenly 2-1. The previously toothless visitors from League One had only just won their first corner prior to that. Begovic had been a near spectator.
Buoyed by their goal, the Bristolians sent another header wide, this time from striker Ellis Harrison.
Within just four minutes of the restart, Rovers, who had made two half-time substitutions, pegged the score back again. A cute ball over our rearguard with the team pushed up for a corner, gave Stuart Sinclair the chance to sprint for goal. Pedro tried to intervene but at the cost of a penalty, a decision that on first glance looked debatable. Harrison smashed home from the spot.
At the other end, Moses attacked the full-back but fired wide before Harrison skimmed the top of the target for the visitors, who were now giving as good as they were getting. Begovic saved from Easter".
Debatable penalty? From the Upper Tier of the Shed, it wasn't debatable! Chelsea's own Match Report

Antonio Conte also paid us some (back-handed) compliments. He explained that he couldn't accede to the pre-match wishes of some Chelsea fans to bring on Chalobah; he was worried that the game might be slipping away, so he had to bring on Oscar. "After his first experience of cup football in this country, Antonio Conte said he was glad his team didn’t pay the price for not being more clinical in front of goal.
Two goals from Michy Batshuayi and another from Victor Moses – all scored in the first half – did the damage against Bristol Rovers of League One, but we survived a couple of scares once the visitors reduced the deficit to 3-2 soon after the interval. One lesson above all stood out for Conte afterwards…
‘We must understand that when you have the opportunity to kill the game, you must kill the game,’ he said.
‘It’s a pity because we were dominating the game but then we suffered. Tonight I knew the English cup, I knew the atmosphere, and I can tell these games are very tough for all.
‘We created a lot of chances in the first half to score many goals, but I don’t like when you concede two goals in this situation, from a free-kick and a penalty.
‘When you leave it open a situation like tonight can happen when you stay afraid of drawing the game until the end.’
Conte spoke in more detail about the first goal we let in tonight ‘We conceded one goal from a cross and we must improve on this aspect. We must feel the danger in every circumstance, above all when there is a free-kick or a corner, because in England usually there can be a great chance of conceding a goal after a corner or a free-kick.’Nathaniel Chalobah remained an unused substitute and Conte explained why ‘The first disappointment is mine because I wanted to put Chalobah on in the second half and play him but the situation didn’t permit this, and I preferred to put Oscar on until the end.
‘The situation could have become very dangerous. It’s a pity because I wanted to permit him to play and also because he deserves to play. He’s a good young player.’"Conte's View

I've also seen another match report claiming the penalty award was 'generous'.
Not entirely sure what incident they were looking at, but there you go.

Funny how the penalty is 'generous', yet the yellow card isn't 'harsh'?
So it's assumed yellow card is acceptable, thus a foul, ergo penalty..

I forgot about the rule change too - I was wondering why it wasn't a red card.
I'm really not sure about the rule change because you have this odd situation where the defender could potentially be in charge of his own destiny but may have a different agenda to the team which is unusual. Ie. If a guy is going through on goal maybe you foul him as the last man outside the box and get sent off but make it less likely they'll score or you take him out in the area and stay on the pitch but guarantee conceding. The defender is probably better off conceding the penalty but the team is likely better off with the red card. I just find that a little bit strange. No doubt everyone will say 'he shouldn't be bloody fouling him in the first place' but that's kind of the point - it's a professional foul anyway.
