I know the consequences where completely different (luckily for Parkesy) but all those that said they should lock McCormick up for life I would expect to have a similar opinion here. The crime is in the decision to turn the car on and put the foot on the pedal. The consequences are then a lottery. In this day and age where there is so much awareness on the subject, this is stupidity on a huge scale and given the report of him driving to go have more drinks I would say it's very lenient. Luckily he has not harmed anyone other than himself and he can hopefully learn from it. His 200 hrs should be spent going around academies telling young pros how bloody stupid he's been. Definitely a lucky man when you think of what could happen. I once drove for a night out on the Isle of Wight then went to the beach when the police came along to find out what was happening, and when I told them we drove but were getting a taxi back he told me I could still be arrested for being in possession of the car keys while drunk! News to a lot of people I think? You can be arrested for absolutely any reason, or no reason at all, but carrying car keys whilst drunk is not a criminal offence and they wouldn't have been able to charge you.

I'm afraid my ex friend (not a friend now) was charged and convicted of just that. A terrible accident occurred and police arrived shortly after with him drunk in possession of car keys away from the vehicle. This was evidence he was responsible for a tragic incident. Off topic, I know. But the spirit of what Asty says is largely true.

A friend of mine was given 11 points for being asleep in the back of his car. He was that drunk that he could hardly walk but not daft enough to drive. He was with the then British Gas.

I think that is classed as 'being in drunk in charge of a vehicle' or at least it used to be. A cousin of mine was charged and banned for it years ago.
