First Season Back in League One
We’ve returned to League One after 5 years away. In that time, the twenty clubs promoted from League Two have had widely different seasons in the third tier.
Two teams achieved immediate promotion to the Championship: Burton (automatically, this year) and Rotherham (in 2013, via the play-offs after finishing fourth). Two teams flipped straight back to League Two: Chesterfield and Wycombe, both in 2012.
The graph (click to expand) shows the distribution of final positions of all clubs promoted to League One between 2011 and 2015 in their first year after promotion.
Fate of Managers
Managers of promoted clubs have also experienced a mix of personal fortunes.
Seven were sacked by their clubs, two (Martin Allen at Gillingham in 2013 and Russ Wilcox at S****horpe a year later) within the first few months after promotion.
Seven were “poached”, two (Alan Knill - Bury to Scun/Irons/thorpe in 2011 and Steve Evans - Crawley to Rotherham in 2012) before the League Two promotion season had even finished!
Six managers are still in the same post to this day.
The graph (click to expand) shows the fate of managers who led clubs to promotion from League Two (2011-2015).

Good evidence Sir. Remember also that we hit the third division already after double/consecutive promotions. Astonishingly as it may be, thirteen months ago our team played in the Conference! I would be delighted to be top half of the third division next year, with enough strength in depth to go full tilt at the FA Cup in the hope of a massive game in the third round. But this will be really hard. It will take DC time to build on the team foundations I really admire. Let's pay him what he's worth and give him time.

Thanks for the work to do that. Interesting the stats on that. Being older and having watched Rovers since the mid 60s I guess I might be more patient that some but I would be happy with a mid table finish next season. I know lots of posters talk about storming the league etc. but I don't think Wael will splash the cash as much as some people think. I still think that managing us fans' expectations will be his hardest job. He sees this as a long term job and will do things in the proper way as he sees it. His time will be spent on the new ground and the club infrastructure esp the youth and scouting system from what he said. About the team he has said he talks with Darrell and would provide what he wants. I think DC wants to gradually improve as well and he will be looking for 3/4 players to go in team and improve it and that is gradual improvement. Wael will need to deliver some concrete results about the ground and stuff we fans can see. The infrastructure is important in building a sustainable Rovers but some fans will want it all by Christmas! I will be happy with gradual and sustainable improvement but I think the next 3 months for the board will be more important than the last 3 months which sounds stupid given what's happened!

Gassmacc1 thank you for your effort. This is an excellent and interesting post and I personally enjoyed the stats.
It reminds me of a drug addict going cold turkey.....
Gassmacc1 you can last - it is a month to the euros. Then once they finish it will be less than a month to the start of the football league season and by that time preseason games will be well underway!

Walsall were one point away from automatic promotion from L1, and they looked bloody awful in the play offs.
No reason why we shouldn't aim for the play offs at least.

The second one is a normal distribution which is interesting but I think it would be most useful if compared with a general graph for the fate of managers in League 1 who were not promoted from League 2 - ie. Does getting promotion gain you any extra security? I think it's probably a given that gaining promotion makes you more likely to be poached.
The first graph is positively skewed which is very interesting because it suggests that clubs coming up from League 2 have generally done quite well and don't normally find themselves in the relegation mire. This is a good sign for us.

Mentioning Walsall, wouldn't be a bad first match of the season. We are surely going to be away and it's not too far and a certain Mr J Ward will be in attendance as he works there now.
