...Well, for our historically geographically closest league rivals, I'm guessing anyone too old to join the 18-31 club may have many memories?!
This fixture was my very first away Gas match! I was a teenager in the mid 80s when saw us draw 1-1. So excited to see my team away for the first time.
What I remember most which I don't think we'll see the like of ever again, it was complete anarchy in the away end! I mean, amazing to see what unfolded.
It was like the hey day of the Tote End on tour!!
I hope this thread doesn't descend into chaos about the trouble etc as we've played important games at Somerton Park, more poignant was the Percy goal right in front of us in 1987. Absolutely incredible atmosphere as was there too!
Anyway, another important match tomorrow.....come on Rovers, we can bring back 3points. Safe journey, Gas...

Percy's goal.
Jumping over a chip shop counter to save ourselves from a hiding from a few locals for 'chatting to our birds'
Being sat on a train while locals hurled bricks at it.
And getting very, very wet a couple of seasons ago there.
Oh, and I got a speeding ticket there about 3 years ago.
Lovely place.

I remember going there for a night game in 1982,we went into a home section of the ground and some Newport fans squared up to us,there was a scuffle and the Newport 'fans' ( who were quite aggressive) turned out to be plain clothes police.
My other memory of Newport is going there for a friendly pre the 79/80 season and not getting a programme,I have all my other programmes from away games (or a ticket stub) in folders which helps me remember certain occasions. So if anyone would like to sell a Newport v Rovers 79 friendly programme I am interested.

Pissing up someones leg in the dark toilets at the s**t hole they called Somerton Park and breaking my thumb on a thugs skull who attacked us outside the ground just as Percy was scoring to keep us in Div 3.

There was huge relief at Percy's goal, I don't think any of us there that day could ever have imagined , that one day in the future we would be happy to be a lower end third division side.

That was some day, stuck in that cage type bunker what i guess was the away end, lads coming in late with police escort then all hell breaking lose with helmets flying around, couldnt see hardly any of the game, and from what i remember a pitch invasion after the goal, or was that at the end? happy days

Having lived in Newport in the late 60's I went to Somerton Park lots of times but it wasn't to see Rovers play. Unfortunately for me when I was a young lad us and the County were in different leagues so I never got to see my beloved team at Somerton Park. I did however get to see Bristol Rugby play at Rodney Parade which traditionally was always played on Boxing Day, memories eh

mid 80's getting locked in after the match. Every time the senior policeman tried to address the crowd through a loud hailer everyone made sheep baaing noises. It was very funny even though we kept there for ages. Cannot remember who we were playing or the score.

Saddo me, my favourite part of Newport when visiting for football is the transporter bridge, a masterpiece of construction:

We were sat in a bar there with all of the wives who had joined us for a weekend away when one of them asked, "Who are Rovers playing today?"

Well they did used to be called Bournemouth and Boscombe so maybe that was her confusion.

Lost 2-0 in a friendly under Buckle a few years ago. Could see the signs then that we were a disorganised rabble with little or no quality.
Newport fans were up for it that evening, a friendly! So tomorrow should be fun.
