I don't think people acknowledge the effect that Mark McChrystal has on this side. Why was he missing yesterday? We are much harder to beat when he is playing, as has been seen since his return to fitness. His record this season, including the JPT, is played 4, won 3, drawn 1, lost 0. He came back into the side after a very poor run of four defeats and one draw. Maybe DC thinks he isn't quite ready to play three games in seven days but I think his influence might have helped to steady the ship yesterday. Seeing the goals on TV I also worry about Nicholls. Is he commanding enough and does he communicate well with the other players? I really liked the big Chesterfield keeper and thought it was a shame when he went back. Also, are we back to the era of relying on loan keepers? Out injured, hurt his ankle.

That bloke at Mansfield summed it up for me.. At least I gave my 50p pocket money in the bucket for his return...F O P R Friends Of Paul Randall....whomever organised that , I am forever grateful :-) Well done, its that kind of thing which makes Rovers special. The same bloke at Mansfield said to me,"not many clubs fans would have been so loyal as Rovers fans with what we have had to put up with"...and I think that's true. For me,I considered myself a fanatic but when Paul Randall was sold it was as if everything negative that had been said to me about Rovers came true, they will always sell anyone any good, they will never get anywhere etc etc, gradually I attended less and eventually stopped going altogether. After a long period of not going to games I started to go again when I knew that they would be relegated from the league, and last season I came to admire the team and manager (maybe not all the directors)..I know that they aren't the greatest players that we have seen play for Rovers but they do give 100% and Morecambe and Mansfield were great games,I consider myself lucky to have been at both.
Respect, trymer..

After seeing that I couldn't even look at the other results, read about it or go online to read on here. Come the end of the match everything that could go wrong went wrong, it was almost comical (not!). Agree with so much that has been said about not over reacting to this result. Newport were not the team of two weeks ago, lots of different players and a system set up to frustrate. When they saw how badly we were playing it gave them hope. But they didn't really get at us. Don't know how many shots at goal they had, but not many. The first two goals were comical and although for the second a Newport player was there harrying the goalie it was us not them who messed it up. Apart from the bloke who scored the second I am not sure if anyone was anywhere near the goal. The last two goals if they try and do that next week it will likely go well wide and we had no one anywhere near them. However, congrats to Newport. My big worry is how we react now. Is this the "Braintree" moment this season. Last year we should have gone to Braintree on a high after the last minute win against Halifax and we all know what happened. I would like to be a fly on the Rovers dressing room this morning. Some home truths will be flying around. Nicholls, he surely won't make as many howlers for the rest of the season as he did in this match. Parkes, just defend clear it, don't try and be too clever so close to goal and hassle the attack, don't stand off. Sometimes we were so deep that our forwards didn't stand a chance. Don't often criticise team selection but when Lines doesn't play our set plays are poor, some players can't even beat the first defender. Am inclined to put the day down to one of those things but tbh was expecting more than 1 point from these two home matches. Anyway onward and upward for the next match, UTG!

Stevek192 - as ever a good report - though I don't think it was a disaster. I see you posted this quite soon after the game and maybe hadn't had a chance to calm down a bit! My son still has bruised hands for banging the bars in frustration... My slightly Thatchers influenced marks as follows: Nicholls - 4. The Newport second goal was one of the moments where the goal is greeted by laughter rather than cheering. (I was sat with 5 gas and 5 Newport fans). Leadbitter - 7. Brown - 6 Lockyer - 6 Parkes - 0 (nought. zero). Why was he kept on and not subbed off? He is over-weight and he's not exactly Usain Bolt in his slimmed down version. A nightmare waiting to happen every time the ball came near him. A ridiculous opening own goal under no pressure whatsoever. Cue the initial giggling from the Newport contingent. He was totally at fault for the third. Just embarrassing. Almost beyond belief that a player can be that bad and last 90 minutes. DC - please don't let him anywhere near the starting XI. Mansell - 6 Taylor - 6 Gosling - 5 Easter - 5 Bodin - 7 Sinclair - 7 Dribuild Hospitality Suite - 9. I had low expectations. Pleasantly surprised by a very well organised and slick operation. Decent food and good service. Well done Rovers! Would have been a "10" but for the officious fool on the door who tried to bar me because I was "inappropriately dressed". I was wearing tailored shorts and had checked beforehand that this was acceptable. Either the chap on the door was trying to have a laugh (failed) - or he is a tw*t. If you're paying £65 for a meal, a programme and a ticket - then I would expect better. So to conclude - far too many "average" displays and we did't take our chances. We didn't deserve anything out of the game - though 1-4 was a bit harsh. UTG - Looking forward to Cambridge on Friday.

People were eating you know !

Very poor mistakes in such numbers in one match is a disaster which was why I used the word.

Very poor mistakes in such numbers in one match is a disaster which was why I used the word. Could equally just be considered freak though. From the highlights I thought 3 out of the 4 goals looked like the kind of mistakes that happen once or twice a season. For it to all happen in 1 game is an odd occurrence especially considering that the rest of the game stats seem to largely favour Rovers - some very heavily. I think it would be a disaster if we'd been comprehensively played off the park by a team like Newport or if this had happened in a crucial end of season game. In the context of October and 5 points off the playoffs with a game in hand off the back of a promotion season I think it could be reasonably called a minor setback and a somewhat flattering scoreline for Newport. Certainly no reason for a fundamental rethink or panic. These results happen during the course of an average season (which seems to be more or less exactly what we are having); it's how you bounce back that is indicative really. I think we're just an inconsistent side who seem well suited to playing away where our fitness levels, generally solid organisation and occasional quick passing game can be very effective. We don't seem particularly suited to breaking down sides at home because we seem to lack game breakers when sides put men behind the ball and slow the game down; we don't seem to be capable of moving the ball quickly through the opposition - only when space is opened up on the counter attack so we're not good at making the running. None of this is surprising given that it was more or less true last season (we looked better away than at home where we often labored) and we have a number of players who are finding their feet at this level and may not ultimately do so. There will be teething problems. The year we made the 3rd tier playoffs under Holloway I remember (I think) that we lost 3-0 at home to Blackpool and 4-1 at home to Grimsby and we looked dreadful doing so but they weren't disasters either.
