How does this thread turn into a criticism of BSS Because he is on the board. And the board should be sacked.

Good work Bristol Rovers, hopefully the bloke won't be afraid to stand up to his employers if any disagreements arise. Re BSS, although the board probably liked to think otherwise why should a volunteer? be in charge of the club comms? But the new guy isn't 'in charge of club comms': he's been brought in to 'advise the board' on PR, presumably in general and on a line to take in particular situations. The board includes BSS, who presumably will soak up this guy's advice, along with the others. Hopefully that will be something along the lines of 'credibility matters, we need to keep the punters enthusiastic and on-board, that involves being as open and honest as possible, and when that isn't possible, at least not treating them like idiots and talking blatant crap.' It's a totally different thing to writing the press releases and shouldn't be remotely a full time job. Any Director's supposed to provide his expertise, insight, outlook and general common sense to discussions and decisions about what the organisation does and how it does it. BSS's expertise is supposed to be PR, but now they're buying in PR advice: does he not like to say anything (therefore a waste of space), advise them badly (therefore a damaging waste of space), or do they just not listen to him (therefore a waste of space and £1 million)?
Of course, in his case, he's also supposed to report back to the people who sponsored his role on the board, but that's the subject of a different audit. Hopefully it's a good thing, hitting at the root of the problem, and he's not going to be used as a front-man to put gloss and spin on rot. Anyone remember that guy we had from the Daily Star - Ralph Someone? Wasn't he the brains behind the 'div 4 champions 2002' banner?Ralph Ellis and no he wasn't behind that banner. he did, however come up with the NATO cross design on the shirts plus the stone and black away colours. Ralph was the Commercial Manager, so was in Barry Bradshaw's role and got made redundant after we'd played about 4 games in League 2. Is now a freelance sports reporter.

I must admit the one time I dealt with him he was fantastic, I had bought a seat and they had oversold them (this was when we were top of Div 1) and gave me a free ticket. I think the one thing the BoD is very skilled at is creating lightening rods away from them.

Sounds like a step in the right direction. Key word though is 'advise'. Advice can be taken............or rejected.

I've looked up our PR guru and he has an interesting CV.
Assistant News Editor of Sun, Worked on National Enquirer and helped up to set up Zoo Magazine (lads magazine).
He will know how important Michelle Thorne's half-time entertainment in late 90s had as an impact on my BRFC life and will surely recommend some raunchy Cheerleader types (US style) in white boots and Rovers shirts (no shorts).
Welcome aboard Doug.
PS All my best to Charlie "Monkey" Taplin.

This is a good idea.
That said, every full member of that board rruns companies that do not seem to alienate their customers.
Plus, as mentioned above, communications was BSS's strong suit while campaigning.
But they need someone onboard to remind them that Gasheads are customers just like clients of their other ventures are, rather than commodities to take for granted, so hopefully this guy does that.

Looks like a good appointment and a step in the right direction now they need to find somebody who can run a football club and advise this disastrous chairman.
