Bristol Rovers 1-2 Blackpool recap: Gas rue poor start in first home league defeat since August..By Daniel Hargraves.
i2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/incoming/article9048043.ece/ALTERNATES/s510b/0_3543392.jpg
Matt Taylor on the officiating.."It’s definitely a foul. You’ll have to freeze fame it whether or not it’s in the box but it’s a foul. Just like a handball in the wall in the first half was definitely that. The biggest one for me is their second goal. I need to get clarity from the officials in relation to what I need to instruct Connor Taylor to do in that situation. Jordan Rhodes is in an offside position, Connor Taylor is on the backfoot, stretching, backpedalling. He heads it down into a dangerous area and their player picks up the ball, makes one pass and the ball is in the back of our net. Does he leave it and let it go through to Jordan? A defender’s instinct is always to try and stop that happening. So for me, that’s still offside but with all officiating nowadays they speak about only when the ball ends up there. But then the action of stopping it ending up there has caused us to be on the deficit of a moment in the game and ultimately a second goal against us. No [he didn't have control] but that’s the way the game was. You wouldn’t be asking me these questions if you thought the referee had had a good game or kept control of it. Our players’ reactions were the same of our fans’ of disbelief at times and frustration." Matt Taylor's initial reaction to the game.
"Started the game poorly. As much as we’ve started the game poorly, a couple of things went against us. There might have been a different outcome in that start. After half an hour we competed and had a few better chances towards the end of the first half. Their goalkeeper has made a couple of saves with his legs Second half was much improved but there was no quality or execution and it was a bit of a stalemate and they’ve always got a threat on the counter attack. Possibly a question mark towards the end of the game but we didn’t threaten their box enough that the game was just totally in the middle of the pitch in the second half." That question mark the Pirates boss was referring to was a possibly penalty shout in the dying embers of the match as the hosts continued to chase an equaliser. Substitute Aaron Collins went down in the penalty area after an obvious collision but the referee Gavin Ward didn't give anything. All officials were subject to negative chanting from sections of the home support but the referee was particularly subject to abuse from the terraces. Ward dished out a total of eight yellow cards, five for Rovers and three for Blackpool, during the course of the game. According to SofaScore, four of the Gas' five cards were given for argument which gives an idea of why Taylor wasn't particularly happy with the officiating post-match and why it was even a topic of conversation in the first place. Asked whether he thought the referee had control of the game, the 41-year-old declared: "No but that’s the way the game was. You wouldn’t be asking me these questions if you thought the referee had had a good game or kept control of it. Our players’ reactions were the same of our fans’ of disbelief at times and frustration."

Bristol Rovers player ratings vs Blackpool..By Daniel Hargraves.
Matt Cox - 6 Another game that feels so strange because, really, the goalkeeper hasn't had much to do but still Bristol Rovers have conceded two goals, both of which he couldn't do anything about. Decent kicking and made a crucial save in the second half, although it did come as a result of his own error.
Luca Hoole (off for John Marquis 67') - 6 For a first league start since October, it was a decent return to the fold for the young defender who has endured a season where minutes, particularly in the league, have been hard to come by. Grew into the game and showed his footballing intelligence in spells, coming off so that Matt Taylor could make an attacking change.
Connor Taylor - 7 In all honesty the defender is pushing an eight but when you've conceded two goals and lost the game, it's tough to credit anyone with an upper-end score but the centre-back showed his class on the ball and pocketed one of the league's best strikers. Unfortunately, that doesn't really matter given the result.
Tristan Crama - 6 The Frenchman has been better but put in a good number of clearances and defended his box relatively well after the early onslaught that saw two goals conceded. A few sloppy passes that have been a rarity in his game of late him down slightly.
Jack Hunt - 6 Another one who has played a lot better in other games this season but it was good to see him back in the starting line up and, to no surprise, he was continuously involved in the final third with his personal highlight in that sense being a cross that almost caught O'Donnell out and looped into the top corner.
Josh Grant (off for Jevani Brown 89') - 6 Maybe slightly harsh that the 25-year-old hasn't gotten a seven because he looked calm and composed in midfield. Dictated the tempo pretty well and looked decent next to Antony Evans.
Antony Evans - 7 Wearing the captain's armband in Sam Finley's absence, the midfielder showed his class and was heavily invovled throughout whether it was putting a delivery into the box, as Bristol Rovers won a good number of free-kicks and corners, or getting his body in the way to help the defensive cause.
Harvey Vale - 6 Some decent deliveries into the box, notably the one in the first half for Luke Thomas. It felt like most of the play for Rovers came down the right hand side.
Luke McCormick (off for Aaron Collins 73') - 6 Had a tricky start to the game but once he got on the ball and in and around the Blackpool penalty area, he looked a real threat. Unlucky not to score in the first half after being denied by a good save from Richard O'Donnell and did well to continue after suffering what looked like an ankle injury that caused him to hobble before coming back on.
Luke Thomas - 6 Virtually playing up front, the forward was lively as he looked to make himself a nuisance with his best opportunity coming in the first half from point-blank range.
Chris Martin - 8 Scored an outrageous goal to make it double-figures for the season and get the Gas back into it. The goal also came at a crucial time as his side were well up against it and it calmed the nerves and got fans back on side, leading to a spell that really should've seen an equaliser. Decent defensive work too.
Substitutes: John Marquis (on 67') - 6 Probably given one of the most unnecessary yellow cards when put through on goal and unable to pull out of a collision with O'Donnell. Used his physicality well but got next to no service after coming on.
Aaron Collins (on 73') - 6 Skipped around trying to make things happen and was the subject of controversy at the end with a penalty shout.
Jevani Brown (on 89') - N/A Came on too late.

Match Stats: BRFC 1 Blackpool 2 - Possession: 56% - 44% - Shots: 10-9 - On Target: 4-5 - Corners: 6-5 - Referee: Gavin Ward - Attendance: 8,013 (561 away)
i2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/incoming/article9047834.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200/0_3543204.jpg Harvey Vale puts a cross into the box for Bristol Rovers against BlackpoolBlackpool made it three League One wins in a row for the first time this season as they triumphed against Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium. CJ Hamilton opened the scoring in the fifth minute when he sidefooted a shot into the top corner, despite Josh Grant's best efforts on the line, following a run and low cross from Kyle Joseph. Luke Thomas then spurned a gilt-edged chance for the hosts three minutes later when he met Harvey Vale's cross but failed to put the ball past goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell. Instead Karamoko Dembele fired high into the net following more good work from Joseph to double the Tangerines' lead in the 19th minute. Chris Martin delicately lobbed in to halve the deficit five minutes later following a long throw being flicked on by Tristan Crama, but Rovers could not go on and find an equaliser. It was only a third away league away win of the season for Neil Critchley's side, who boosted their pursuit of a play-off place after surviving a stoppage-time shout for a penalty when Aaron Collins was tackled in the area. First 30 minutes we looked like a team suffering from canary earworms; shockingly off the pace as Blackpool flocked all around us nicking the ball from under our beaks and threatening with every forward flutter. We chirped up as the game progressed but were nowhere near League 1 standard let alone top flight. Of course, when you're off the pace everything goes against you as it did here. I won't say the ref had a poor game because the iFollow camera offers no close-ups, but it was uncanny the number of times the decision went against us, especially at throw-ins. and the number of times our player picked the ball up to take it and was told to put it down again. It had me thinking the ref thought B***** was still in charge and he had to big up. I hope they turn it around for the Exeter game because apart from Martin's little flick that was truly embarrassing

Just got back..
A wonderful time out and about, the weather was conducive for an apple roam and great to see establishments thrive in tranquility and anticipation of forthcoming match early doors..
An interesting time with some of you!
Anyhoos, onto some less important matters..
Are we on the beach? It was Blackpool!? I would say, no but season is over... but we now have little to play for, apart from pride. The risk is we slip into the paradigm of pre relegation form where a win draw or loss is irrelevant.....I know we're a working progress in transition, but there are certain dangers that come with with that.
We are back to a very quiet Mem at times. I think the paragraph above very much lends itself to that.
Okies....keeper made some good saves, one punch out, but his general distribution and command of area, poor. Also his coming out of box belshaw-like left a lot to be desired. It's now a given that opposition teams bang in set pieces under the crossbar, which he struggles with and so do our defence. I like Cox, he's young and energetic, will probably play at a higher level than we will ever achieve.....just old fashioned and prefer an experienced goalkeeper instead of blooding someone else's.
This leads to a change in continuity in defence. Nice to see Hunt back, who done ok. Just ok. I thought Connor Taylor ever reliable was off the pace, and Crama pending one disaster was pick of the backline that kept dembele and rhodes quiet. But the goals we conceded, I felt the whole unit could have done better..
Midfield missing Finley and I thought we done ok, but Blackpool were just better most of the time lost our battles, Blackpool were quick to get the second ball and looked hungrier....we were again lethargic in possession, attacking and pace. Pick of the mid, my m o m AE with a very hardworking performance. Strong player covered much ground and stick to captain's task well.
Well done CM....the goal tally continues with cheeky backheeled flip!
I thought Blackpool were well organised, pretty much outplayed us first half. I really liked their no15 left back with fair hair, we just couldn't get anything going down that side - LT switched sides for a while. Their keeper picked regulation catches out the air almost unchallenged at times, and made great save v LT.
People will moan at the officials again and rightly so....book a keeper for time waisting, but you're never gonna send him off, so he'll carry on.... baffling decisions left wondering why? And inconsistency..... I'm not sure about penalty shout but leaning towards yes, but it's AC isn't it and words got around....?
To conclude. We are typical in transition club with new man working out what he wants and who he wants.... it's going to be ugly and simpering for a while. That coupled with the most horrendous injury list as it feels someone gets injured every match, is a recipe for beach football. We're not far away from it. Apathy await.

My first game in over 4 years and if that's anything to go by, probably my last . What a waste of a trip from Devon that was. Brought my mate with me, Man City supporter, and was bigging up how he would be pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and the football. That went well. To my now untrained eyes Crama and Martin played well, as did Marquis and Collins when they came on. Apart from that, meh. For the first half hour it looked like the team had never met each other before kick off. Can I also say that due to my health I had to forego the Blackthorn end and chose seats in the East stand instead and it was bloody FREEZING. Good view though and to my eyes, stonewall, no doubt about it, penalty, even allowing for the normal bias. And the ref was really s**t.

Oddly enough I went in the East Stand for the NC game, first time for me, as you mentioned excellent view see both corner flags ( on this side!!) But even though it was a bitterly cold evening and did have on a pair of long John's 😊 I was pleasantly surprised as not being that cold ❄️, couple of seats around me were unused but otherwise full, AND I will add .. there was a guy there wearing shorts, but did have leggings on ...and another guy wearing a sleeveless top,he did have bare arms!!

Rovers have added the highlights video to youtube. But it is the same video that Sky Sports put out, so not much there at all. I still haven't got to see the chances we had, like Luke Thomas in the 6 yard box that could have made it 1-1, nor the Aaron Collins penalty shout right at the end. Thought our media department were supposed to be so much better nowadays....
