We need a goal to cement the good start, and demoralise our opponent.

We need to see our defensive resilience now. A couple of key bookings against us already, but we have depth on the bench.
If we hold out 1.0 and keep everyone on field from here, I will be impressed enough, but there’s possibility to add further goals against home side coming onto us the longer it goes on, for an even more interesting result.

Barnsley SIX up v Port Vale, who had their goalkeeper sent off early in the game.... and a rude awakening to the EFL for Wrexham 1-4 down at home to MKD

1-1 Shame we could not hold on to the win, but am still happy with an away point.

Bristol Rovers player ratings vs Portsmouth..by Daniel Hargraves....Attendance: 19,165
Match Stats: Possession 57% - 43% - Shots 21-10 - On Target 5-6 - Corners 11-3 - Yellows 4-3 - Referee: Sam Allison
Bristol Rovers started their 2023/24 League One campaign with a 1-1 draw away at Portsmouth, conceding a heart-breaking equaliser in added time after Luke Thomas finished an excellent move in the first-half.
The Gas, lead by coach Andy Mangan amid toxic turd Barton's ban, started well, knocking the ball around a slick, wet surface with the heavens opening on occasion on a stormy south-coast afternoon. Their early dominance was rewarded when Lewis Gordon threaded an excellent ball through to Aaron Collins, who kept himself onside and in a one-one position. The Welshman did excellently to round goalkeeper Will Norris but failed to hit the target with an empty net waiting to consume a tap-in.
Pompey did go forward on occasion and could've had the lead as Colby Bishop, one of the favourites for the League One golden boot, fired over debutant Matt Cox's cross bar from close distance.
John Musinho's side proved to rue that missed chance as excellent link-up play between Collins and captain Sam Finley saw the latter charge into space on the left, finding Jevan Brown who squared unselfishly to an unmarked Luke Thomas to bury home the opener on his competitive return for the Gas.
The hosts looked to equalise before half-time but failed to lay a menacing glove on Cox until early in the second half when the 20-year-old was forced into making an excellent save to tip Joe Rafferty's effort over his crossbar.
Pressure from those in blue and white cranked up as Rovers did well to keep hold of their clean sheet, particularly thanks to their goalkeeper who played well beyond his years.
Mangan's side did manage to test Norris on occasion with Collins having a curling shot well-saved but the visitors rued not doubling their lead as substitute Kusini Yengi equalised in added time with a header.
Coming away from a promotion favourite with a result is something for Rovers to be proud of, especially considering the fact that their manager wasn't present.
Here's how Bristol Live rated each player...
Matt Cox - 8 The young goalkeeper was excellent on his senior debut and deserved a clean sheet. Comfortable with his feet, making good decisions when dealing with deliveries into his area and, of course, the occasional save. The decision to start him over the experienced and well-thought of James Belshaw was justified.
Luca Hoole - 7 Dealt with most of what came his way superbly. Has done very well to make himself the first-choice right-back.
James Wilson - 7 Also looked solid on debut. Very comfortable with his feet too as we've seen all pre-season.
James Connolly - 6 The defender was potentially a surprise shout in the starting line-up for some but had a solid first half. Replaced by Taylor on the hour mark with Mangan looking to deal with Portsmouth's aerial bombardment as they went for an equaliser.
Lewis Gordon - 7 Looked excellent going forward and had some good moments in one on ones. The pass for Collins' first-half chance was exquisite and should've counted as an assist.
Sam Finley - 7.5 The captain's presence in midfield was constantly felt. Feared the worst for him when he picked up an early yellow card but was a metronome for the Gas. Superb work for the goal too.
Grant Ward - 7 Like his central midfield partner, Ward made his presence felt. Linked up with his teammates nicely too.
Aaron Collins - 7 The forward was a menace all afternoon but really should have come away with at least one goal. Missing an open goal in the first-half will be a major disappointment personally for him.
Luke Thomas - 7.5 Scoring the goal was of course his and the team's highlight of the afternoon and there were some bright spells from the winger going forward. Off the ball he looked to get stuck in but did have to apologise to the side lines for a rogue pass at one point. That part of his game will only improve.
Jevani Brown - 7.5 Showed exactly why Rovers brought him to the football club and the creativity we've seen through pre-season. No debut goal but an assist I'm sure he'll take.
John Marquis - 7 Although he didn't get a goal on his return to Portsmouth, his hold up play was excellent and won plenty of fouls, vital for quieting the home crowd. Had a decent opportunity early on but the angle was against him. A great display of the dark arts.
Substitutes: Connor Taylor - 5 Looked solid on his return besides losing the ball in a dangerous area. No doubt he'll be in the starting line up soon once he's had time to settle back into the group.
Josh Grant - 4 Made a vital touch deep in added time to clear a dangerous cross. Just nice to see him back playing competitive football.
Antony Evans - 4 His fresh legs were exactly what Rovers needed as they looked to kill the game.
Scott Sinclair - 4 Didn't have much to do besides put pressure on the Portsmouth defence. Could've had a great chance if found by Brown late on.
