Sunday 31st March 2024 - The FA Women's League Cup Final.
Arsenal v Chelsea - 3pm KO - Venue: Molineux Stadium
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15986/production/_133045488_gettyimages-1357286510.jpg Chelsea & Arsenal have met 9 times in all competitions since Jonas Eidevall became Gunners boss in 2021, with the Blues winning 4 and Arsenal 3.Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall insists there is no "mental obstacle" for his side before their Women's League Cup final against Chelsea on Sunday. The Gunners were blown away by Emma Hayes' side at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago but did beat them 4-1 at home earlier in the season. Last season, Eidevall's side bounced back from an FA Cup defeat by Chelsea to win the League Cup seven days later. "It's a big weekend for the club. It's a focused feeling," said Eidevall. "I don't think there is any mental obstacle for us saying that we couldn't beat Chelsea because we've done so at numerous occasions. "There also shouldn't be any complacency going in and saying, like we're playing against a very, very good team and they've been beating us also on numerous occasions. "It's about coming down to the best team on the day and preparation plays a huge part in that and that's what we're focusing on." Sunday's final, live on BBC Two and iPlayer from 14:30 BST, represents Arsenal's last realistic chance of silverware this season with Eidevall's side six points adrift of both league leaders Chelsea and second-placed Manchester City in the Women's Super League with five games remaining. Chelsea, meanwhile, are chasing a quadruple in Emma Hayes' last season in charge and progressed to the semi-finals of the Women's Champions League with a win over Ajax in midweek. The Blues have been beaten in the past 2 finals and Emma Hayes, who will become the United States head coach in the summer, wants them to right that wrong. "Have you watched our performances in the last two Conti Cup finals? Because I have and they have - again and again," said Hayes. "Let me be clear on this, the team know exactly how I feel about that final on Sunday in terms of showing up and showing ourselves. I don't care if it's important to them, it absolutely is important to me." Chelsea raced into a 3-0 lead against a lacklustre Gunners a fortnight ago, but they were completely outplayed at the Emirates earlier in the campaign. "You have to show up on a day, let's be clear, they're two top level teams," said Hayes. "Both are capable of winning the games, both have their own qualities. You've still got to show up though and present yourself in the way that gives yourself the best chance. "The team that shows up strong, particularly the first part, you think about the Emirates game, it was over at half-time. You think about at Stamford Bridge, it was over at half-time. You better show up from the off. If you don't, it can make it a little bit difficult."

Ellie Roebuck: Manchester City and England goalkeeper on 'road to recovery' after stroke..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/3147/production/_133051621_gettyimages-1505416054.jpg Ellie Roebuck has 11 caps for England
Manchester City and England goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck says she is on the "road to recovery" after having a stroke. In a post on social media, Roebuck said tests found she had suffered a "left occipital infarct" but there was no lasting damage to her brain or vision. Roebuck, 24, who has 11 England caps and was part of the Euro-2022 winning squad, last played for City in May 2023. "I'm now really positive and excited for my return to the pitch," she said. Roebuck said she had tests having "not felt well for a little while". "I've had many weeks of follow up tests, specialist appointments, and with the support of the medical team at the club I'm on the road to recovery," she added. "It's great to be back with the girls, working on my rehab and more importantly feeling back to being normal Ellie. "Life can throw unexpected challenges at you and if this year has taught me anything, it's that I'm strong and will give it all I've got for the thing I love most." A left occipital infarct is a type of ischaemic stroke, which is caused by a blood clot clogging an artery in a brain. When this occurs in the occipital lobe, it is referred to as an occipital infarct. The occipital lobe is the visual processing area of the brain and strokes in this area can cause visual impairments and loss of sight. Roebuck earned the last of her England caps in 2023 and has appeared 131 times for City, having come through Sheffield United's academy.

FULL-TIME - Man Utd 4-1 Everton - An impressive second half earns victory for Manchester United.
Report By Michael Emons, BBC Sport at Leigh Sports Village.England international Ella Toone scored twice as Manchester United fought back from conceding an early goal to beat Everton and keep alive their slim hopes of qualifying for next season's Women's Champions League. Everton, the lowest goalscorers in the WSL, were gifted a 10th-minute lead when Maya le Tissier's backpass was underhit, enabling Katja Snoeijs to take the ball around Mary Earps and score. England goalkeeper Earps was furious with her defenders, but then nearly made a costly error herself as her loose clearance fell to Kathrine Moller Kuhl, who had earlier hit the outside of the post, but she fired over and could not capitalise. United nearly equalised just before half-time but Geyse's powerful low strike was well blocked by goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan. Some fans booed United off at half-time, but they performed much better after the break and scored three times inside an eight-minute period to take complete control. Millie Turner headed in the first from a right-wing corner, before Toone got two goals. For her first, she fired low into the net from 20 yards and she then finished off following Lisa Naalsund's bright run after Everton had lost possession in their own half. Substitute Leah Galton sealed the victory with a low, hard strike into the bottom corner in the final minute. This result takes United into fourth in the WSL, back above Liverpool, who were beaten 4-1 at home by Manchester City on Saturday. United are six points behind third-placed Arsenal - who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot - although the Gunners have played a game fewer. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/CB4D/production/_133054025_turnergoal.png Manchester United scored three times in an eight-minute spell in the second half

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B93F/production/_132432474_gettyimages-1477907181.jpg Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall speaking to BBC Sport: "Very happy with the performance. The first half was for the coaches and the second half was for the fans and the audience. "We fight hard and of course I'm happy that we are on the better side of it today." On the confrontation with Emma Hayes: "Not much. We had a discussion before the game where both teams have to agree on whether they are going to play with multi-ball system or not. "Chelsea said they wanted to play with one ball and we said we wanted to play with multi-ball and then when it suits them in the last few minutes of the game, they want to take another ball to take a quick throw in and I only said "you guys wanted to play with one ball." "So, it's not my problem. It's all good I think, it's just in the heat of the moment." More from Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall, speaking to BBC Sport on delivering silverware with Arsenal: "It comes with the job. When you coach certain clubs, they expect to win something and that's not only Arsenal. The hard thing is that there are a number of clubs that sort of expect you to win silverware but not all clubs can win so for us doing it now twice in a row. It's good but we want even more." On Frida Maanum: "I think we trust our medical team, we got really good information from them as well." On the post-match celebrations: "I hope wild [celebrations] and probably much wilder for staff because the players have international break coming up on Monday but I do not!" More from Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall, speaking to BBC Sport: "We talk as a team about being able to perform in high-pressure situations. I think the answer is to be prepared for situations, situations, situations. We had plans, we adapted as a team, and that's how we came off." On how much the players will be able to celebrate: "Not a lot, I don't think a lot. They have really important national team games coming up as well. We must make sure they get another opportunity to celebrate this victory." On Emma Hayes talking about 'male aggression': "Mmm... Okay. My word on what was happening would be that before the game we had a discussion between the clubs about whether to use one ball or multi-ball system. "In this situation, Arsenal said multi-ball, Chelsea said one ball. The decision was to play the final on a one ball system. The ball goes out of play, the Chelsea player wants a new ball to take a quick throw-in and I said 'we play with only one ball and you guys were the ones who decided that'. "Obviously it now drives all kinds of emotions in there, nothing more, nothing less. I can't see that I did anything, had any form of contact with anyone - either a player or a coach. That was it." On how it feels to be called an 'aggressor': "To be honest I can't really take it seriously. I can't really take it seriously." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/6/5b64c2b6-ccde-4c41-b6a7-15f501d9df9a.jpgChelsea boss Emma Hayes speaking to BBC Sport: "It’s a tough loss. There was nothing between the two teams, I didn’t think it was a high quality game to be honest with you. They took their chance and they are winners. "I don’t make excuses. We had a big chance to win it right before the end and didn’t take it. They took theirs and I can’t ask for any more from the players. They gave their all today and it was a big effort from them. Congratulations to Arsenal." On what happened to Frida Maanum: "Player welfare comes first every time. I really hope she’s ok. It’s always worrying when that happens." On the altercation with Jonas Eidevall: "I think there’s a way to behave on the side of the pitch and not for the first time, I’ve been in women’s football a long time and I don’t think we should tolerate male aggression like we did today. "Fronting up or squaring up to a player is something that’s unacceptable. I’ve never been booked in 12 years of my career but I think there’s a way to behave on the touchline. He received a yellow card but perhaps should have been more." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/31/9e8bd54e-58a0-4644-8c80-13d6d33ea9c9.jpg

Sunday 31st March 2024 - Women's League Cup final - at Molineux Stadium
Arsenal 1 (Blackstenius 116) Chelsea 0 - AET
Report By Emma Smith, BBC Sport at Molineux.Stina Blackstenius scored a 116th-minute winner as Arsenal beat Chelsea in the Continental Cup final. Blackstenius fashioned space in the Chelsea area to settle a tense encounter with a low strike that Chelsea keeper Hannah Hampton could not keep out. It sees Arsenal retain the title, beating Chelsea just as they did last year. On a dramatic and emotional day at Molineux, Arsenal midfielder Frida Maanum was carried from the field on a stretcher at the end of normal time after collapsing. Arsenal's Maanum 'stable' after collapsing on pitch Chelsea, whose dreams of being the first English women's side to win four trophies in a season since Arsenal in 2007 have been dashed, appeared to have taken the lead on 21 minutes through Mayra Ramirez's 25-yard drive. However, VAR - in operation here, unlike in the Women's Super League - spotted that Erin Cuthbert had controlled the ball with her arm in the build-up, and it was disallowed. The reprieve gave impetus to Arsenal, who ended the first half stronger. Katie McCabe's stinging drive forced a good save from Chelsea keeper Hampton, before Lotte Wubben-Moy volleyed wide from the subsequent corner. Cuthbert appeared to catch Blackstenius in the Chelsea area after the break, but that was not enough to warrant a penalty. Both keepers made important stops in the second half. Hampton was again called into action on 66 minutes, with a sharp low save to deny Cloe Lacasse, before Manuela Zinsberger stood up to the charging Lauren James late on to deflect her effort wide. Extra time was required after a goalless 90 minutes that ended in worrying scenes as Maanum went down off the ball late on. Paramedics and physios from both teams tended to the midfielder for several minutes, before she left the field on a stretcher and with an oxygen mask on, Arsenal later announcing she was stable and able to talk. Ultimately, in front of 21,462 spectators - a new Women's League Cup record attendance - it was Blackstenius who produced the moment of magic. The Swede muscled away from Cuthbert in the area and fired in to clinch a record-extending seventh League Cup crown for Arsenal. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/45B5/production/_133054871_gettyimages-2121049536.jpg Stina Blackstenius scored her ninth League Cup goal of the season to win the final for Arsenal

Frida Maanum: Arsenal midfielder 'stable' after collapsing on pitch in League Cup final..By Emily Salley, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/FE83/production/_133055156_fridamanuum.jpg Maanum in action before being taken ill
Arsenal midfielder Frida Maanum is in a "stable condition" after collapsing on the pitch during the Continental Cup final against Chelsea. Play stopped for seven minutes when the Norway international went down off the ball in second-half stoppage time. Maanum, 24, received medical treatment before being taken off on a stretcher. "Frida Maanum is conscious, talking and in a stable condition. She will continue to be monitored closely by our medical team," Arsenal said. Arsenal's players & manager Jonas Eidevall quickly signalled for medical staff when Maanum went down on the ground, with Stina Blackstenius & Katie McCabe rushing to her side. Both sets of players remained on the pitch while Maanum received oxygen through a mask before being carried down the tunnel at Molineux. Alessia Russo came on to replace the midfielder and play was resumed in the 14th additional minute with the scores level at 0-0. Arsenal went on to win the final 1-0 with Blackstenius scoring the winner in the 26th minute of extra time. Russo told BBC Sport: "It's devastating to see one of your team-mates go down like that. "We're all wishing and praying that she's OK. I think it was written in the stars that her best mate went and scored the winner for her. "Frida is a massive player and plays with every bit of her body. She did that today. We just hope she's OK." Maanum joined Arsenal from Swedish side Linkoping in 2021 and has since scored 14 goals in 60 Women's Super League appearances. Match-winner Blackstenius expressed concern, saying: "It's always really hard. She's a team-mate and a friend to all of us. We care so much about her. "You worry a bit when stuff like this happens. We said we wanted to do this for her, to get this win for her because she couldn't be with us at that point."

He was released soon after being detained on arrival in Madrid from the Dominican Republic. He is suspected of receiving illegal commissions when negotiating a lucrative deal to stage the Spanish Super Cup competition in Saudi Arabia. Prosecutors are seeking a two-and-a-half-year jail term. Mr Rubiales denies any wrongdoing. After stepping off the plane, he was taken into a black van with several members of the Civil Guard. He was released soon after. Spanish public broadcaster RTVE reports that Mr Rubiales could appear in court on Thursday. Mr Rubiales was in the Dominican Republic when police searched his home last month. They also searched the football federation headquarters and made several arrests. Ms Hermoso and her teammates said the kiss was unwanted and demeaning. Mr Rubiales was forced to resign, but has denied any wrongdoing. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/04/03/08/83183917-13266741-image-a-1_1712130446361.jpg

Emma Hayes: No FA action over Chelsea boss' 'shove' on Arsenal's Jonas Eidevall..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/18186/production/_131349689_gettyimages-1460507459.jpgChelsea manager Emma Hayes will face no action after she appeared to shove Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall at the end of Sunday's League Cup final, the Football Association has said. Hayes appeared to push away Eidevall at full-time of Arsenal's 1-0 victory. It followed a touchline altercation during the game between the two managers and Chelsea player Erin Cuthbert. Hayes later accused Eidevall of "male aggression". Eidevall called that language "irresponsible". When asked what happened, Hayes said: "I am not down for male aggression on the touchline. I told him this." Eidevall said he did not feel "comfortable with the label". The Swede said the situation with Cuthbert arose because the teams had disagreed about whether there should be a multi-ball system when the ball went out. Eidevall was booked for the incident but Hayes later said she believed he should have been dismissed.

Leah Williamson: England captain 'fit and ready' for return..By Emma Sanders, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11AB9/production/_133077327_gettyimages-2132513146.jpg Leah Williamson missed the 2023 Women's World Cup after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuryEngland defender Leah Williamson is "fit and ready" to make a return for the first time in a year in Friday's Euro 2025 qualifier against Sweden, says manager Sarina Wiegman. Williamson suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in April 2023 and withdrew from February's friendlies with a hamstring issue. There were fresh knee injury concerns during Arsenal's Continental Cup final win over Chelsea on Sunday. "She is in a good place and is ready," said Wiegman. "We needed to manage her a little bit. She had a full training session yesterday and will be on the pitch again today (Thursday) "That is really good. She is still building but she is in a good place - if she comes through today, of course." Asked whether Williamson will captain the side, Wiegman said: "If she plays, she's the captain. We just want to get through this training session and see how she is and how the team is." There was a blow for Manchester City goalkeeper Khiara Keating, who pulled out of the squad with a knee injury and has been replaced by Southampton's Kayla Rendell - her first senior call-up. All 23 available players trained at St George's Park on Thursday and will travel to London to face Sweden at Wembley. Defending champions England have been drawn in a qualifying group with two of the world's top six as they face France, Sweden and the Republic of Ireland, ranked third, sixth and 25th respectively. The top two teams from the League A group will qualify automatically for next summer's tournament, with the other two sides entering the play-offs. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/4/4/c0d1fdf1-130c-4c2c-a73c-15c1e571b84c.jpg

England v Sweden - Friday 5th April - 8pm KOichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/4/4/50b8624a-6d07-4285-b08a-2251cd135833.jpgEngland women's coach Sarina Wiegman is now speaking to the media too and confirmed that Arsenal defender Leah Williamson is set to return for the Lionesses' opening Euro 2025 qualifier having recovered from injury. "She's still building [her fitness] but she's in a good place and she's ready - if she comes through [training] today of course," said Wiegman. "It's really good that she's back. It's good to have another quality player in the squad, We were in a good place already and now we're in an even better place." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/4/4/c0a2d799-2fe6-49bf-868b-96de63fb9371.jpgEngland beat Sweden 4-0 in the Euro 2022 semi-finals but coach Sarina Wiegman says the Lionesses "haven't used that" as motivation for Friday's game. "That was then and it was a great moment, but we've moved on," she said. "A lot of things have happened between then and now. "After [losing] the World Cup final we were playing in the Uefa Nations League, trying to qualify for the Olympics. When we knew we couldn't qualify we wanted to reset and get ready for the first game [of Eurto 2025 qualifying] against Sweden. "Since the [qualifying] draw we've been focused fully on the qualifiers against Sweden and the Republic of Ireland (9 April) - because you can't prepare in just a few days." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/4/4/e8bc9f31-cbc4-4e1d-800a-d3e82ac32bf4.jpgManchester City goalkeeper Khiara Keating has withdrawn from the Lionesses squad "as she continues to manage a knee injury", England have confirmed. The 19-year-old is yet to win her first senior cap for England, but has represented them at every youth level, from Under-17s up to U23s. She has been replaced by Southampton’s Kayla Rendell, who has been called up from the U23s to the senior squad for the first time for the upcoming Euro 2025 qualifying fixtures. England kick off their qualifying campaign against Sweden at Wembley on Friday (20:00 BST). The Lionesses then travel to Dublin to play the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday (19:30). ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/4/4/f1dea9db-32aa-4e3d-b25a-e63b727758ad.jpgHard to believe it's already almost two years since England's women won Euro 2022 on home soil. The Lionesses begin their defence of the title with a Euro 2025 qualifier at home to Sweden and full-back Lucy Bronze spoke to the media about that earlier. "It's so cool to say it’s the defence of the title, the trophy," she said. "[We've got] the most difficult group there has ever been but to have that chance to create history and go back-to-back in the Euros is insane." England have been drawn in a group with two of the world's top six as they face France, Sweden and the Republic of Ireland, ranked third, sixth and 25th respectively. The Lionesses are away to Ireland on Tuesday. The top two teams will qualify automatically for next summer's tournament, with the other two sides entering the play-offs.

Frida Maanum: 'No obvious cardiac causes' for Arsenal midfielder's collapse..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/128D3/production/_133078957_gettyimages-1948102702.jpg Maanum has made 28 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal this seasonArsenal say Frida Maanum has undergone tests which found "no obvious cardiac causes" for her collapse in the Continental Cup final. The midfielder went down off the ball in second-half injury time during the final at Molineux, in which the Gunners beat Chelsea 1-0 after extra time. Arsenal say Maanum, 24, has been fitted with a device to monitor her heart. The Norwegian has not joined up with her country for their Euro 2025 qualifiers, which begin on Friday. In a statement released on Thursday, Arsenal said Maanum has undergone "extensive testing" which has been reviewed by "two leading cardiologists". "There are no obvious cardiac causes found from these thorough investigations so far," added the Women's Super League club. "Frida has subsequently had a monitoring device fitted to record her heart function and will now undergo a progressive return to train protocol. "Once she has been monitored for a full one-week period, her normal training will be closely reviewed and monitored, before a decision will be made on her returning to play." Arsenal had previously said Maanum was "stable and doing well" after the Continental Cup final was stopped for seven minutes as she was treated by medics after collapsing on the pitch in Wolverhampton, before being taken off on a stretcher. She did not need to go to hospital and travelled home with her Arsenal team-mates. Norway are set to begin their European Championships qualification campaign on Friday against Finland before travelling to the Netherlands on 9 April. Maanum has made 77 appearances for her country, scoring 14 goals. Arsenal are currently third in the WSL and host Bristol City next on 14th April.
