ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14A6/production/_132968250_gettyimages-2084794546.jpg Sofie Lundgaard received treatment for a prolonged period before being substitutedLiverpool midfielder Sofie Lundgaard has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. Lundgaard, 21, sustained the injury in the first half of Sunday's Women's Super League (WSL) win over West Ham. A scan showed damage to a medial ligament and she will begin a period of rehabilitation. Lundgaard, who has played for Denmark at youth level, joined Liverpool from Fortuna Hjorring in January 2023 and has made 17 appearances this season. Liverpool are fifth in the WSL, behind fourth-placed Manchester United on goal difference.

West Ham: Women's game at London Stadium is 'big priority' for Hammers..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/88C7/production/_132951053_gettyimages-1172132526.jpg West Ham's only game at the London Stadium was against Tottenham in 2019 and attracted a crowd of 24,790Hosting a women's game at London Stadium is still "a big priority" for West Ham Women, despite them not playing there since 2019. After this weekend's fixtures, the Hammers will be the only Women's Super League side not to have played at their club's men's stadium this season. The only time they have played there was a 2-0 defeat by Tottenham five years ago. "I know that it's a big priority for the club," said boss Rehanne Skinner. "It's something they are working towards making happen." Fixtures on 23 and 24 March are known as Women's Football Weekend, which generally takes place in the men's international break and provides an opportunity for the women's teams to play at their male counterpart's larger stadiums. After this weekend, all of the 11 other WSL teams will have played at their men's grounds. West Ham v Chelsea and Sunderland v Durham are the only fixtures across the WSL and Women's Championship not taking place at the men's stadia on Women's Football Weekend. "All of us want to play in stadiums and we want to try keep evolving the stadium forward in that sense," Skinner added. "Hopefully, whether it's this year or next year, we get a solution for that and we can do that more frequently." BBC Sport understands the women's team board are keen to host a WSL fixture at the London Stadium but also want to continue to grow attendances at their current home, the Chigwell Construction Stadium, which is also home to non-league side Dagenham & Redbridge. Just over 11 miles separate the two grounds but an additional 56,422 spectators can fit inside the London Stadium than at Chigwell. The club have seen a significant increase in season ticket sales and attendances this season and had a record sellout crowd against Arsenal in their 2-1 victory over the Gunners last month. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/61B7/production/_132951052_gettyimages-1424917342.jpg West Ham play their matches at Dagenham & Redbridge's ground, which has a capacity of 6,078 and is 11.6 miles from the London StadiumPaul Konchesky, the Hammers' previous manager, said in 2023 playing at the 62,500 capacity London Stadium is "not a big deal" for his side after former West Ham defender Lucy Parker criticised the club for failing to hold a match there. Responding to the Hammers' announcement that their men's under-18s team will play their FA Youth Cup semi-final at the stadium, Parker posted on X: "When will we get a game at the stadium? Only WSL side not to have a game at the men's stadium and haven't played there since 2019." Playing women's matches at the home of the 2012 Olympic Games is not straightforward as the club do not currently own the stadium. The current concession agreement in place, which was initially signed in 2013, only caters for friendlies and youth matches outside the men's matches. West Ham currently pay close to £4m a year to play at the venue, which is funded by the taxpayer and run by London Stadium 185 Ltd with the London Legacy Development Corporation as the overall landlords. It means a women's match would be regarded as an additional fixture and bring a hosting charge of £100,000, plus inflation over the intervening period.

Football Black List: Former England player Kerry Davis honoured..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/A27D/production/_132979514_shutterstock_editorial_10528733a.jpg Kerry Davis made her England debut in 1982Kerry Davis, who was the first black woman to play for England, will be celebrated at an annual ceremony highlighting the most influential black people in British football. Davis, who won 82 England caps between 1982 and 1998, has been recognised for her achievements in women's football. "She is a pioneer and a leader," said Football Black List founder Leon Mann. "We feel she should be more visible to the next generation and celebrated by all those who love football." Former Croydon, Liverpool and Napoli forward Davis will receive the Keith Alexander Award and is being celebrated alongside a wide range of influential figures of Caribbean and African heritage. The annual Football Black List recognises the efforts of black figures working in various areas of the game. "It is a particularly important time to be celebrating women of colour, given the recent abuse of Black women both in politics and football. We must stand together and reject this discrimination," added co-founder Mann who, alongside Rodney Hinds, came up with the initiative. "This event would not be possible without the support of the Black community and the wider football family. I would like to thank the Premier League for continuing to support this important celebration." England internationals Trent Alexander-Arnold, Nikita Parris and Jess Carter have been named on the 2023 players list, along with Burnley's Lyle Foster and Bayer Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong. Burnley manager Vincent Kompany and former England manager Hope Powell, who is currently women's technical director at Birmingham City, are on the coaching list. They are joined by Hull City boss Liam Rosenior, Port Vale manager Darren Moore and West Ham academy coach Nicole Farley.

Nikita Parris: Man Utd can compete with Man City in WSL derby..By Emma Sanders, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/3CBB/production/_132974551_gettyimages-2010670029.jpg Nikita Parris is Manchester United's top scorer this season with eight goals in the Women's Super LeagueManchester United forward Nikita Parris says they can compete with rivals Manchester City but they need to learn from previous experiences in the derby. They go head-to-head at Etihad Stadium on Saturday with 12 points separating City and fourth-placed United. But Parris, 30, hopes United can show the quality which helped them finish as Women's Super League runners-up last season and cause an upset. "As a team we need to step up and grow," Parris told BBC Sport. "I don't think we have to show, tell or overhype our qualities in the team. We've shown we can compete against the likes of City, Chelsea and Arsenal. "We just have to replicate performances we've had in the past against Manchester City. All our games have been competitive but in big moments we've lacked experience and it's cost us." United drew 1-1 with City the last time the sides met at the Etihad and beat them at Leigh Sports Village in May. But City got revenge when they won 3-1 at Old Trafford this season and later beat them in the League Cup. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/10/23/22/63765905-11345945-United_managed_to_grab_all_three_points_in_the_sort_of_match_the-a-103_1666561557590.jpgMarc Skinner's side have slipped down the table since then, with Parris admitting they have been "naive" in big moments. "I think the key word is consistency. We were competing last year. This year we haven't maintained those high standards," added Parris. "It's alright being up there and competing for one season but you have to be up there consistently. That's where we need to push forward as a team. It won't happen overnight but that's our aim. "We're definitely not where we want to be. The reality is we need points to go on our side and games out of our control to go our way. We have to take care of business and, in all honesty, we haven't, especially in the big games. "These are all learning curves. The club's existence has only been six years. It's a really small time frame in which you've got to get up to speed and be ready to compete with the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal. "They have had a longer establishment in the league but also have quality in depth of squad and players. It all counts in the end. But we don't make excuses. We just continue to fight for each other every single day and work hard. We want to push this club forward." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4FA3/production/_132978302_bbc-sport-player-stat--0b425153-191e-441a-a523-cab76a233e5b.pngDespite United's season not going to plan, Parris has enjoyed success individually. She has netted eight goals in 15 appearances, averaging a goal every 115 minutes - bettered only by her 2018-19 season at Manchester City - while her conversion rate (26.7%) is the most prolific in her career. It has led to fresh calls for her to be included in the England squad for Euro 2025 qualifiers next month, having narrowly missed out on selection in February. "I want to play for my country and represent England at the highest level in games, qualifiers and tournaments. That will always be an ambition of mine until I retire," said Euro 2022 winner Parris, who has 71 caps for England. "I just want to keep going. The easiest thing for me to have done was to give up. I could have made them think 'she's not fighting for it' so I just want to get my head down and do well for Manchester United." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/01/14/16/79997739-12962059-image-a-10_1705250768648.jpgParris has played for some of the biggest clubs in her career, joining United from Arsenal, having had previous spells at Lyon, Manchester City and Everton. But she feels she has grown with experience and was able to settle at United quicker than expected. "I think I've been able to understand, over time, the players I'm around," said Parris. "I wanted to hit the ground running but the reality was I haven't played with some of these players before so it was always going to take time. I was never worried. I've always said I would get here; it would just take a little bit more time. "But here at Manchester United I feel like it's hasn't taken as long as it has at other clubs. I think that's just the camaraderie of the girls on and off the pitch. We have an unbelievable connection that I haven't quite experienced in any other team. It's just different." United will need to draw on that this weekend when they face a City side chasing a first WSL title since 2016 and in great form. "[That defeat at] Old Trafford explained everything to me in terms of the feistiness of the derby," said Parris. "They will be up for it, we will be up for it and it will be a great spectacle. I've been trying to sort out tickets for family members who are excited for the game. I think there's been a general buzz. "It means a lot to players here like Ella Toone and Katie Zelem - players who have been here a long time and seen the club grow from the bottom upwards. It means a lot to them so it means a lot to me."

WSL Manchester derby: Khiara Keating relishes 'walking out in childhood club'..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1C14/production/_132988170_gettyimages-1802580120.jpg Khiara Keating has kept more clean sheets than any other WSL goalkeeper this seasonSaturday's Manchester derby at Etihad Stadium will be a full-circle moment for Manchester City goalkeeper Khiara Keating. The 19-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough season, becoming Gareth Taylor's first-choice keeper ahead of internationals Ellie Roebuck and Sandy MacIver. Keating received her first senior England call-up in October and in February was named the Women's Super League player of the month. The upcoming derby is the first WSL game at the Etihad since December 2022 when the two Manchester sides drew 1-1. For striker-turned-goalkeeper Keating, who was born and raised in Manchester, playing at the home of her childhood club holds extra significance. "Growing up in Manchester, you're either red or a blue," Keating told BBC Sport. "I went from being a ball girl there when I was little to walking out of the tunnel. It's going to be a special moment and a moment that I'll have to take in. "Walking out in my childhood club is going to be so special, especially with all the fans there - and we know what we have to do. "Knowing that I'm going to be part of a derby and playing at the Etihad is amazing. Every game is special but the derby is always that little bit more special, it's that rivalry." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/11/22/81135217-13071919-image-a-2_1707692155847.jpgKeating has had three call-ups to Sarina Wiegman's Lionesses squad in total but is still waiting for her maiden cap. On Saturday, she will face England's number one Mary Earps, who Keating said is "class, on and off the pitch". "She's always that role model for younger players like me to look up to," she added. "What she's achieved in the last few seasons is unbelievable. "She's very special and doing a lot for the women's game." City have already beaten Marc Skinner's side twice this season, winning 3-1 in the WSL in November and 2-1 in the League Cup in January. They will need to beat their neighbours to keep pace with Chelsea in the title race, with the top two sides separated only by goal difference as it stands. After being knocked out of the League Cup and FA Cup in back-to-back games, City's full focus is on trying to win a first league title since 2016. "The goal is to win trophies and we put ourselves in a good position - so far, and it didn't work our way," Keating said. "We know what we have to do in the league now and it's win all the games, score as many goals as we can and keep clean sheets down the other end. "Now the focus is on the league and we know what we have to do to redeem ourselves from the cups."

Rikke Sevecke: Ex-Everton defender on the heart condition that ended her career, women's health and playing at Anfield..By Caroline Barker & Sean Kearns, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E0A5/production/_132990575_gettyimages-1338608894.jpgRikke Sevecke was forced to retire at the age of 27Rikke Sevecke was alone in her new apartment in Oregon when she got the phone call that would change her life. The Everton defender had just swapped Merseyside for the west coast of the United States to join National Women's Super League (NWSL) side Portland Thorns. But Sevecke would leave Portland having never played a single minute for the Thorns after doctors detected a heart condition during her medical and advised her to retire immediately. The cruel irony of the situation is not lost on Sevecke. At 27, she felt it was time to pursue her life-long dream of playing in the US but it was the medical examinations involved in her move that uncovered a heart condition called arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC). "It's why I have a lot of mixed feelings," Sevecke told BBC's World Service Sportshour programme. "I'm happy they found it, because now I know. But I'm also really sad that I couldn't continue doing what I loved." Sevecke had just earned her 54th and final cap for Denmark when she received the news. Though her initial medical with the Thorns had detected concerning signs, national team doctors gave her permission to play in the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where Denmark were knocked out in the last-16. "I decided that summer that I wanted to transfer to another club and in the medical they discovered something a little bit alarming," said Sevecke. "They told me that what they saw was OK, but they would like to monitor me and have a closer look after the World Cup. "So I went back after the World Cup and they'd told me I could play and I shouldn't be worried or anything. But when I came back and they checked me again, it looked a little bit worse than before. "They wanted to do extra tests but in the meantime I could still play, so I signed for Portland. They called me while I was there getting ready to train and told me to stop immediately." Until then, Sevecke's career had run smoothly and she earned a move to Everton - where she spent three years - in 2020 after starting with Brondby in her homeland. For Sevecke's Liverpool-supporting family, watching her Everton side leave Anfield with a 3-0 win in 2022 was a highlight of her time in England. "My dad was in the stands and he's a Liverpool fan. He was almost crying when we walked onto the pitch, and when we won he had tears in his eyes. It was just really amazing to see how happy he was and how much it meant for him as well," she said. Heart-related issues in men's football have been well-documented in recent years, with a number of high-profile players such as Sergio Aguero, Daley Blind and Iker Casillas suffering varying problems. Tom Lockyer, the Luton Town captain, suffered a cardiac arrest during a Premier League game against Bournemouth in December that left the 29-year-old 'technically dead' for two minutes and forty seconds. i2-prod.liverpoolecho.co.uk/incoming/article26477990.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_GettyImages-1442810533.jpgWhile the defender is yet to make a decision on whether to return, Christian Eriksen returned to football in 2022 eight months after a cardiac arrest of his own after fitting an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD). Sevecke believes women's health in football is under-researched and has taken a role with Fifpro - the International Federation of Professional Footballers - to highlight the problem. "It's really important to highlight that it can happen to anyone," Sevecke said. "A lot of people will have something (wrong) with their hearts and not know it. I didn't know it and I've had it my whole life. "It's kind of scary that I've been playing for 24 years and I've never known that I have something wrong with my heart that actually gets worse by playing football professionally. "It's really important to try and change those health and safety checks, to have them more often, that they're more advanced and more thorough. "If I hadn't moved clubs in the summer it might not have even been picked up."

"Jess Park is quick and that is the icing on the cake, the assists she has had and now she is getting goals." On Bunny Shaw: "That was a fabulous goal, Bunny is making the movement it is not easy and going up against a good goalkeeper in Mary Earps - it gave us a great start to the second half." On the title race: "We have always been confident and the hard part is doing it. "We are going against a title rival [Chelsea] who has been really successful over the years and we are trying to change that. "But, we have to take one game at a time and we don't need to worry what happens tomorrow - we will be giving it our very best." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/23/2b6a082b-e36e-47d4-9165-bc95a13991a4.pngMan Utd boss Marc Skinner, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live:
"When I look back at the first goal it is offside, then we are in the game. "All of a sudden they get a corner and they get momentum at home. It is not a goal [Jess Park's opening goal] and it shouldn't have stood. "We had chances before that which we would have taken on another day, we were making Khiara Keating work way more than what Mary Earps is having to work. "When I watch it back it is disappointing losing a game as big as this." On Bunny Shaw being offside for the opening goal: "What can you say? "It is a massive game, to miss that call in a game like this it changes the momentum and football momentum is key. "We controlled Man City, we had more shots of quality than they did, but they got a goal and momentum changed. "But I can only say I am proud of the players and the way they reacted - I am proud of them." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/DE39/production/_132998865_table1.png

FULL-TIME - West Ham 0-2 Chelsea
Report By Tom Mallows, BBC SportChelsea returned to the top of the Women's Super League with a battling victory at West Ham. Aggie Beever-Jones and Erin Cuthbert were on target as the Blues moved back above Manchester City on goal difference with five games remaining. Chelsea were made to work hard for the points by a spirited West Ham side, who did play like a team sitting second-bottom of the table. In a pulsating first half the Hammers nearly took the lead after 20 seconds through Viviane Asseyi's header, only for Chelsea to go up the other end and score with their first attack. Lauren James ran on to a searching through ball into the penalty area and played a neat first-time cutback for Beever-Jones to smash home from close range. The Hammers felt aggrieved when Honoka Hayashi had the ball in the Chelsea net but was flagged offside, despite replays showing the Japan midfielder was behind the last defender as she ran on to a flicked header. Cuthbert sealed the points late on with a thumping volley from inside the area. Chelsea boss Emma Hayes speaking to Sky Sports: "We got an early goal which helped. I thought we were fortunate to be 1-0 up at half time - our defending out of possession was... We struggled, didn't take responsibility in the right moments. "I changed something at half time and second half it was much better from the team as a whole. But also the freshness from the bench, for me that was the key difference. On change at half time: "I never tell and I'm not going to. Something that was good for us, and it worked, gaver us the ascendancy. On the first half being played on one side of the pitch: "Yes it was. I think it was also because of the transition. We'd turn the ball over and it would come straight down that side of the pitch. Like I said I think we were fortunate to be 1-0 at the break. "Second half delighted to get the second goal. [Relieved?] I don't know about that neccesarily. I didn't feel that. I did feel it was critical that we got a second goal. On the first goal: "They gave us that space and we exploited it. Sometimes I don't think we did it enough in the first half. Sometimes you want to over play. "The turnover was our biggest problem, out of possession in the first half we struggled. The half time adjustments and the subs really helped." On if Chelsea weren't at their level: "I'm not going to be harsh on my team, we're playing a game every three days. When you do this time and time again I don't think it is always going to be top, top performances, but you gut it out. I'm really pleased with my team. On the subs: "Absolutely [gave Chelsea fresh legs]. Mayra came on and was very commanding, Cat, Fran, Erin, Guro at the end - all of them played their part. On if wins like today bring trophies: "If you want to win the league you have to come here and win. I knew what the game would be, so well done to our team. I want to give them a pat on the back. Normally I'm hard on them, but today I am really pleased." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/24/4ed1bf23-ddb9-4974-ab2c-78d90423b539.jpgWest Ham manager Rehanne Skinner speaking to Sky Sports: "To be honest, it seems like at the time that we scored the goal which was more than a metre onside, obviously we go in in a completely different landscape. Last week there were two goals that were scored against us, neither of which should have stood which is another point, draw for us. "Tottenham game, we get an apology after the game for a goal that should never have stood for offside. I'm getting a bit sick of it to be honest. We have had chances today and obviously we need to make sure we take those chances but just the way that the game goes on. We just cannot keep having those types of mistakes in games because it completely ruins the game." More from West Ham manager Rehanne Skinner speaking to Sky Sports about the disallowed goal: "It's not good enough, the bottom line is, if that's how I operated in my job, I wouldn't be in my job. That's the bottom line. People can say it's because we've lost 2-0 and things like that but it's because it's a frequent occurrence and it's three games now. "Apologies post the game doesn't change the outcome. we have to work so hard and I'm so proud of the players performance today, I thought we were superb, we created good moments and good chances and I just think it's really disappointing that you come out of that with no points to be honest." On changes that need to be made: "A lot of people are talking about VAR and things like that and if that's what we need to do to get results right then that's what we need to do. "Ultimately the referees still aren't professional in this game so they're not actually in a situation where they are solely focussing on these games and I think that has just got to change. "The game has still got so much growing up to do, we're still not right across the board with the game. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/24/0be3d095-a928-42f5-ad8b-6245ffc98e19.png

Rehanne Skinner: West Ham boss says she's 'sick' of incorrect decisions after Chelsea defeat..By Marissa Thomas, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E3DA/production/_133003385_gettyimages-2109974521.jpg West Ham were left frustrated after losing against Chelsea in the Women's Super League ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4B7A/production/_131322391_rehanneskinner3.jpgWest Ham boss Rehanne Skinner says she is "getting a bit sick" of incorrect decisions after having a goal ruled out against Chelsea on Sunday. The Hammers lost 2-0 to Emma Hayes' side in the Women's Super League, with Honoka Hayashi flagged offside despite replays showing the contrary. The Hammers boss believes bringing a video assistant referee (VAR) into the women's game is something to consider. "The goal was more than a metre onside," Skinner told Sky Sports. Chelsea went ahead early on through Aggie Beever-Jones, but Hayashi's goal was ruled offside just 12 minutes later and could have changed the complexion of the game if it had stood. Replays suggested the goal should have been allowed, showing the Japan midfielder was behind the last defender as she ran on to a flicked header. But without VAR there was no opportunity to overturn the decision. "Last week [against Liverpool] there were two goals scored against us, neither of which should have stood," she added. "Tottenham game, we get another apology after the game for a goal that should never have stood for offside. I'm getting a bit sick of it to be honest." West Ham created plenty of opportunities which they failed to take and Skinner acknowledged this while calling for improvements in the game. The Hammers didn't have a shot on target in the match, the first time since 2 April 2023 against Liverpool that they have failed to do so in a WSL match. "We have had chances today and need to make sure we take those chances, but the way that the game goes on, we cannot keep having those type of mistakes in games because it completely ruins the game," she continued. "The bottom line is, if that's how I operated in my job, I wouldn't be in my job. "I'm just at the point now where it's near enough every week. Apologies after the game doesn't change the outcome. Manchester United manager Marc Skinner was also vocal on the need for VAR in the women's game after Jess Park's first goal for Manchester City on Saturday was allowed to stand despite an offside in the build-up. "If that's the argument we need to start getting results right, then that's what we need to start doing," the Hammers boss said. "Ultimately the referees still aren't professional in this game so they aren't actually in a situation where they are solely focusing on these games. That's got to change. "The game has still got so much growing up to do, we are still not right across the board in the game," she added. "I lost my job at Tottenham after we lost 2-1 to Liverpool and we got an apology the next day to say the goal shouldn't have stood. It has got to be better."

Report By Steve Sutcliffe, BBC SportArsenal fuelled their chase of the Women's Super League title as they came from behind to beat Aston Villa at Villa Park. Jonas Eidevall's side dominated from start to finish and should really have enjoyed a greater reward than their three second-half goals from Victoria Pelova, Lotte Wubben-Moy and Stina Blackstenius. The Gunners' victory keeps them six points behind the top two, Chelsea and Manchester City, with only five matches remaining. Ebony Salmon's first-half goal had put the hosts ahead in a match that was delayed by 45 minutes, with the visitors arriving late at the ground because of traffic disruption. It is the second consecutive week the Gunners have made a embarrassing faux pas on their travels, with their fixture at Chelsea nine days ago also held up after their socks clashed with those worn by the home side. But unlike that defeat, they were in control against Villa - despite the defensive lapse that allowed Adriana Leon to pick out Salmon, who guided a low effort into the bottom left corner from 10 yards. That proved to be Villa's only shot in the match and the hosts had to repel wave after wave of attack from the visitors, who peppered their goal with 37 efforts - the highest total by any team in a single match in the WSL this term. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/24/b8549577-229f-45dc-b433-7c67a62f002d.pngichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/24/c7edbb16-86b9-49f0-885b-5d2091f8802e.png

Maddy Cusack: Memorial match for Sheffield United player 'bittersweet'..By Áine O'Donnell, BBC Newsbeat.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/01/25/12/80458013-13005799-image-m-38_1706187586848.jpgFootballer Maddy Cusack played for teams including Birmingham City and Aston Villa, but she referred to West Hallam as her "real club". She was a member of the junior squad as a child - one of two female players at the time. So it seemed fitting for the small team to stage a memorial game in honour of the Sheffield United midfielder, who died last year aged 27. Former team-mates, childhood friends, and Maddy's brother Richard were among those who took part in Saturday's charity match in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Many of them hadn't stepped on a pitch in years but wanted to get involved. Maddy's sister Olivia says it was heart-warming to see the number of Maddy's former team-mates and friends who turned up. "I can't believe the amount that have come back and wanted to do it," she tells BBC Newsbeat. "A lot of them don't play football now and haven't put their boots on for a good few years." But, for Maddy's family, the game was still tough. "It is difficult because you're programmed to kind of see her on the pitch and look out for her - especially for my brother playing today," Olivia says. Olivia says it's "tricky watching football in general" for her now - and she says the first women's match she watched following her sister's death was particularly difficult. "You often kind of forget, and you're often looking at blonde ponytails... a lot of them look like her from behind," she says. But, despite the difficult memories football might bring, Olivia says it's worth it. "Things like this, it's really important that we do it because it spreads awareness," she says. "And it reminds everybody of Maddy, and it keeps her legacy alive. "It's very emotional, but you just kind of have to put that to one side and think about why you're here and why it's so important." The match was in aid of The Maddy Cusack foundation, set up by her family to continue her legacy "by supporting and making a difference within the world of women's football". i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/01/25/20/80458985-13005799-The_FA_are_now_set_to_launch_a_fresh_investigation_following_new-a-59_1706213573957.jpgMaddy Cusack's family, which includes her sister (second left) and mother (second right)There has been no official explanation of how Maddy died, but her family have spoken out about the pressures faced by female players. In January the Football Association (FA) announced its own investigation, which follows an external investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing at Sheffield United. Her family is waiting for an inquest - a court hearing to establish the circumstances surrounding her death - to resume. One of the players who isn't a regular was Maddy's brother, Richard, who also found the day difficult. "It's been very hard actually, today, to see so many people from our childhood and faces you associate with happy times, but ultimately we're here because she's no longer here with us," he says. "Which is sad, isn't it? So yeah, it's kind of almost conflicted. "It's a happy day today. Lots of smiles on faces - everyone's enjoying themselves. But ultimately for me, the reason why we're here is tragic, isn't it?" He says other players "jumped at the chance" to be involved. "They've been brilliant and the support that we've had... there was no question of whether they wanted to do it or not," he says. "Maddy was such an inspiration within Ilkeston." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/09/22/10/75721773-12548381-Sheffield_United_legend_Billy_Sharp_tweeted_a_heartfelt_photo_of-a-19_1695375664745.jpgSheffield United legend Billy Sharp tweeted a heartfelt photo of him and Cusack celebrating the club's promotion to the Premier LeagueHarry Cooke was another player who decided to take part. He played on the same West Hallam juniors team until Maddy had to leave due to FA rules at the time preventing girls and boys from playing together. "It was quite uncommon for a boys team like us to have to have girls playing for us. "So you'd turn up, and the other lads would see a girl on our team and it was a bit of a shock. "And she always shocked them and everyone else who was watching with with how good she was." Similar to Richard, Harry also described the day as being filled with conflicting emotions. "It's amazing to see everyone come together," he says. "Obviously, it's bittersweet because this is the reason we're all coming back together. "Maddy would have loved to be here today."

England: Leah Williamson returns to Lionesses squad for Euro 2025 qualifiers..By Emma Sanders, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/EB83/production/_133019206_gettyimages-1481463854.jpg Leah Williamson missed the 2023 Women's World Cup after suffering an ACL injuryLeah Williamson is in the England squad for Euro 2025 qualifiers against Sweden and the Republic of Ireland and could earn a first cap since last April. The centre-back, 26, made her Arsenal comeback in January after nine months out with an anterior cruciate knee ligament (ACL) injury. She was called up by England for friendlies against Austria and Italy in February but withdrew through injury. Williamson, who captained England to Euro 2022 glory but has not featured for her country since a 2-0 defeat by Australia on 11 April 2023, has started the last three games for Arsenal, including Sunday's 3-1 victory over Aston Villa. England boss Sarina Wiegman said: "Of course I'm very happy. The squad looks good. "I'm looking forward to working with [Williamson] again. We all didn't expect [her to pull out in February] and she the least, so it was a hard one to take and a big disappointment for her and us too." It was a minor hamstring problem that caused Williamson to withdraw from the last gathering. "But you have to get back playing games," Wiegman said. "She recovered really well, it doesn't take too long which is good. Now she is getting into a rhythm. Of course she has not played many games yet, but she is getting there and she needs the minutes now." England squad
